Kishore Kumar is one of India's legendary playback singers. He sang thousands of songs in Hindi, Urdu, Bengali and Tamil languages. He has also sung many bhajans. His career started at the age of 12 when he won an inter-school singing competition with a rendition of a song from the movie "Faisla". Along with Lata Mangeshkar and Asha Bhonsle, Kumar was considered to be one of the best three female singers in India at that time. He has been awarded several civilian honours from his home country, including the Padma Bhushan award in 1968 and Padma Shri award in 1974 for his contribution to Indian music and film industry respectively. Kishore Kumar composed music to five Marathi films: "Garv Mahadev" (1953), "Sandhya" (1958) and two other films called "Chitralekha" (1969) and "Tapa Tapa tapa". His songs in the film "Yaadon Ki Baaraat" won him the Filmfare Best Music Director award. He composed music for six Hindi movies: "Baaz", "Khel Don", "Amar Prem", and four others: "Andaz", ""Agni Bhairavi"," 'Seeta Aur Geeta' and 'Ghungroo Mushkil'. Apart from his singing and composing talents, Kumar was also a writer, director and actor. In 1954, he wrote the script for the movie "Ghunghat" and in 1973 he directed a Tamil movie "Kaviyin Kanravugal". In 1954 he wrote story, screenplay and dialogue for the Bengali movie "Sanjher Pidim". In 1961 he acted in a song sequence in the Hindi movie 'Dilli Ka Thug'. In 1968 he recorded two songs from the movie 'Safar', both composed by S D Burman-a bhajan in the film called "Raam Naam Satya Hai" and a patriotic song called "Desh Ke Geet Ga Gaaon Ke".
